John Muir Trail Day 25
Sunday, 28 August 2022\n\nWe hiked off the JMT today to Cloud’s Rest, a mountain with amazing views of Yosemite Valley. It’s a pretty steep up and we carried an extra 3 litres of water so we can dry camp up here. The views are amazing. Unfortunately there is a nearby forest fire that is making everything hazy. But as of 3:30pm, we are all on our own up here.

John Muir Trail Day 24
Monday, 29 August 2022\n\nSo we slept in to 7am. Had a leisurely breakfast watching the suns rays hitting all the peaks and valleys in Yosemite from Clouds Rest. Around 9am we headed down around 3000 feet to the JMT trail again. It only took 2 hours or so, our easiest day by far. We are camped so it’s as easy as possible for Angela to get to Half Dome tomorrow. I decided that I am too uncomfortable with heights to do the cables. So I will wait with our bags below. This camp is lovely, about ten tents could be here, but we have it to ourselves. There is a good rock to climb up and watch the trails and pack miles. A nice stream to wash and get water. A nice place for the final night.

John Muir Trail Day 23
Saturday, 27 August 2022\n\nToday was the only day of the trip that had a level hike to Tuolumne Meadows where there is a shop and a chance to drop trash. I had a breakfast burrito and Angela got a ramen to replace a dinner she didn’t want anymore. After this we hiked up to Upper Cathedral Lake and had a swim, washed our clothes and a great night.

John Muir Trail Day 22
Friday, 26 August 2022\n\nWe started the morning with a fairly easy climb up and over Donahue Pass. What we did expect was the very tough down. Very rocky with lots of steps and washed out path. Eventually we got to the river meadows at the bottom of Lyell Canyon. We stopped at the edge of the Tuolumne no camping zone, around Evelyn lake trail junction. We chatted for a long time with Lois and George, who we met the previous camp.

John Muir Trail Day 21
Wednesday, 24 August 2022\n\nSo the tent stayed up. Angela went out a few times and saw amazing stars. I slept like a baby. In the morning we walked down 2,000+ feet to the JMT trail, then immediately up for another six miles to Rosalie Lake. It’s really pretty. We had lunch, swam and Angela took a nap and I read a book.

John Muir Trail Day 20
Tuesday, 23 August 2022\n\nToday we decided to hike to Minaret Lake and spend the night. To get there you walk the JMT anyway with a four mile hike up, off the trail. The Minarets are volcanic cores and very pointed and rough. The lake is large and good for a swim. We have had a great day up here. Let’s hope the wind doesn’t blow the tent down.

John Muir Trail Day 26
Tuesday, 30 August 2022\n\nI chickened out of climbing the cables up Half Dome, but Angela wanted to go it. To avoid the crowds, we got up early and walked over. Sure enough, it was pretty empty and Angela had a fairly easy time. She said it wasn’t as good a view as Cloud’s Rest, but impressive. After the climb, we walked thousands of feet down to Happy Idles and the end. We bumped into our fried Laura on the way as well. But we had to rush to the bus to Mammoth and didn’t linger in Yosemite valley. But we are done. Tough and wonderful.

John Muir Trail Day 19
Monday, 22 August 2022\n\nIn the morning we said our goodbyes to Sam, Mike, Ernie and Angela. They left early to meet Sam’s wife Alice and head into Mammoth. We left around seven into Red’s Meadow for a resupply. Angela’s ankle still wasn’t great, to I asked if they had a cabin. They did. I paid, but we had to wait from 9am to 3pm to find out they didn’t have the one we paid. We ended up with a big upgrade, so I guess it worked out. We also got to talk to loads of other hikers.

John Muir Trail Day 18
Sunday, 21 August 2022\n\nWe thought they day would be full of gradual ups and downs. Little did we know (as we clearly didn’t read our maps properly) that we would climb nearly 2,500 feet up to Tully Hole (which is not a pass) and then down to Purple Lake and then back up to 10,400 feet. Only after 10 miles did the trail turn more even. Angela also fell over and twisted her ankle mid- morning. But we had a nice last camp near Red Cones with Angela, Sam, Mike and Ernie.
