We spent the day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which inspired Avatar. Unfortunately, we timed the visit with a blizzard—the worst in several years. Not that it deterred our guide from taking us miles up and down ice stairs with hundreds of meter falls and no visibility. What we did see was amazing, but I was happy to get back to our hotel.
Famous for its unique peaks and stunning scenery, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is China’s first national forest park, which was inaugurated in 1982 and was listed as a UNESCO geopark in 2004. The park is part of the much larger 397.5 km2 (153.5 sq mi) Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
