Stayed Koyasan Shojoshin-in

Today we headed north to Koyasan, a mountain top religious city formed of over 100 temples and an enormous ancient cemetery. Many temples have been given money to pray for the dead. The Koyasan is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After a train ride, a bus and a tram up the mountain, we arrived and walked to the temple we were staying in, Shojoshin-in. As a family with children, they put us in a house on the grounds, with its own private garden. It was lovely and old and big. The main building was a maze of rooms for smaller groups and common gardens and baths.

Then we set out to see as many temples (that are open to the public) as we could, including:

We also had a lovely vegetarian dinner, in a private dinning room. My only regret was that we didn’t get to see or mingle with any other guests.

We also headed out to Okunoin Cemetery to see it in the evening. It is huge, old, and very atmospheric.
